Citadel Marines raise $15,000 for memorial scholarship

CHARLESTON, SC – April 25, 2011 – The 2011 running of The Citadel’s Bulldog Challenge raised $15,000 in memory of Marine Capt. Warren A. Frank, Citadel Class of 2004. Frank was killed in Iraq in November 2008 while delivering humanitarian aid. He is one of 15 Citadel graduates to have died in the line of duty since the war began.Sponsored by the Naval ROTC unit and Citadel Marines, the Bulldog Challenge is a six-mile endurance race course and one of the Lowcountry’s premier fitness events and fundraisers.

This year’s race, which was held in March, fielded more than 550 competitors from military and civilian organizations, colleges, universities, law enforcement and the general public from around the nation.

A check was recently presented to Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa by Marine Staff Sgt. Dan Siemieniec, an active duty enlisted Marine attending classes at The Citadel as part of its Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP).

“This money will go a long way in The Citadel’s efforts to develop future generations of leaders. In just two years we have raised more than $25,000 to establish the Capt. Warren A. Frank Fund so that we may one day use the proceeds for leadership development initiatives,” said Col. Paul B. Dunahoe, commanding officer of the Naval ROTC unit at The Citadel.

“Capt. Frank epitomizes The Citadel’s definition of a principled leader and embodies all of the virtues, and characteristics, and honor our country expects of its Marines. He gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country and we feel his inspirational leadership should be honored through this program.”
