The City Manager’s Spotlight provides details about what is happening in the City of Columbia in an effort to keep citizens informed about City operations. The City Manager’s Spotlight on October 2016 reflects important initiatives that will highlight major projects in the City of Columbia. Here is a snapshot of the October Spotlight.

 

Imagine Mill District Public Workshop 

The City of Columbia Planning & Development Services Department invites the public to attend a drop-in format Public Workshop to review the Phase II draft recommendations and concepts and help shape the Capital City Mill District Area and Corridor Plan. Imagine Mill District is a planning effort to develop a community vision for the future of the Whaley, Olympia, and Granby neighborhoods – The Capital City Mill District.

picture1Register Now for the 10th Annual Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence

Mayor Steve Benjamin, Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine, and the City of Columbia staff will host the 10th Anniversary of the Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence. According to the Violence Policy Center South Carolina is ranked number five in the nation for women killed by men. The Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence brings awareness to the community and allows everyone to take action against domestic violence.

The Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence will be held at

  • Spirit Communications (1640 Freed Dr. Columbia, SC 29207)
  • Saturday, October 8, 2016
  • Open exhibits will begin at 8 a.m.
  • The Purple Rally will begin at 9 a.m.
  • The Walk will begin at 10 a.m.

The Walk is free to the public and registration is available at https://mayorswalkagainstdomesticviolence.eventbrite.com. Businesses are encouraged to form teams and participate in this community event.

Columbia Empowerment Zone Inc. Announces New Business in the City

The Columbia Empowerment Zone Inc. has office space available at 1509 Lady Street downtown Columbia. The office facility consists of 9,049 sq. ft. multi-tenant building with a large kitchen, large conference room, four restrooms, raised flooring, and loading dock with pull up doors. Current office spaces along exterior and center wall range in size from 85 sq. ft. to 110 sq. ft. The building has two large open areas in the center that can be configured to meet tenant needs.

The Columbia Empowerment Zone Inc. staff held an invitation only drop-in gathering on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 to welcome the Ohmega Group, LLC to the City of Columbia. The Ohmega Group, LLC is most recent business to be located at the Empowerment Zone facility 1509 Lady Street.

OHMEGA was established in March 2004 in Jacksonville, Florida as a veteran-owned, minority-owned engineering consulting firm specializing in electrical, mechanical and plumbing engineering and technology solutions. In 2016 OHMEGA expanded its offerings to include Structural Engineering services.

OHMEGA provides engineering consulting services to commercial, government, and institutional markets, both domestic and international. One key differentiator between OHMEGA and other local competitors is that we have extensive experience providing specialized engineering design services for the aviation market, including systems, airfield engineering and construction engineering inspection.

City Brings a Brand New Ballgame to Sustainability

The City of Columbia’s Office of Sustainability and the Community Development Department are bringing a brand new ballgame to Spirit Communications Park on Thursday, October 6, 2016.This joint conference will cover topics including sustainability, recycling, homeownership, landscaping and home maintenance. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Ted Abernathy, Economic Leadership LLC, will be the keynote speaker of the conference and sharing his case study entitled “Looking Around the Corner to See the Future We Can Hardly Imagine” with the attendees.

Breakout sessions will highlight environmental programs that can save residents money and help the environment. Sessions will include:

  • A League of Their Own: Information for Residential Contractors
  • Bat 1000 for Recycling
  • Take the Lead in Home Maintenance
  • Make a Clean Sweep: Managing Food Waste
  • Slide Into Homeownership
  • Maintaining the Field: Green Landscaping Tips
  • Seal the Win with Solar

The registration price of $20 includes a buffet ballpark picnic, afternoon ice cream with Team EV Electric Vehicle showcase, the green expo and an optional “Environmental Excursion” bus tour. The bus tour is limited to 25 and pre-registration required.

Columbia Choice Awards Call For Entries

The Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission and Columbia Green present the 15th Annual Columbia Choice Awards for Landscaping and Beautification. These prestigious awards recognize individuals, businesses, neighborhoods and organizations whose work has significantly enhanced the appearance and quality of life of Columbia’s environment.

Awards will be given in six categories:

  • New Construction/Site Development
  • Renovation/Reuse
  • Site Beautification Management
  • Education
  • Neighborhood/Community
  • Special Achievement.

All entries must be received by the Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission no later than October 3, 2016. Awards will be presented at Columbia Green’s Annual meeting in November.

The Report to the Community for the 2015-2016 Fiscal Year is provided to citizens for information purposes in order to share accomplishments and highlights related to the City’s operations from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. Please note that due to the volume of daily activities required to run, grow and transform our city, this report does not encompass all relevant outcomes during this period of time however, it provides various snapshots from departments across the City of Columbia’s organizational structure.
