City of Charleston designated as Pinwheel City

On Wednesday, April 13, at 11:30 a.m., Mayor John Tecklenburg with the City of Charleston and staff of Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center observed the city’s designation as a Pinwheel City in observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The City of Charleston signed on with the Children’s Trust of SC as a Pinwheel City in support of their efforts to raise awareness for child abuse prevention across our state. The pinwheel was chosen as the symbol for child abuse prevention to represent an image of hope, safety, health and most importantly, happiness; the pinwheel signifies efforts to change the way our nation thinks about prevention.
Children’s Trust of South Carolina is the only statewide organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting public and private prevention efforts that keep South Carolina’s children safe. The organization works to prevent child abuse, neglect and unintentional injuries so that every child has the opportunity to thrive in a healthy, nurturing environment.
Mayor Tecklenburg said, “Our children are our most important responsibility as adults and parents. Across the board, child abuse of any kind is the most difficult to comprehend and the most important to prevent. Join with the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center and the Children’s Trust of SC to raise awareness and let our children know we care.”
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This month and throughout the year, the City of Charleston encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making our community a better place for children and families.
In addition to Mayor Tecklenburg, speakers at the press conference were Carole Swiecicki, Executive Director of the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center, Heather Woolwine, Board member of Children’s Trust of SC, and Sylvia Mitchum, the Director of Charleston County Department of Social Services.
