City of Columbia to present $135,000 check to Senior Resources

October 24, 2016

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin and members of City Council will present a $135,000 check to Senior Resources at 11 a.m. on Oct. 31 at the Denny Terrace Community Center.

“On behalf of the City of Columbia, we’re thrilled to be able to support the programs Senior Resources has in place to improve the lives of our senior neighbors,” said Mayor Benjamin.

Senior Resources offers a full spectrum of programs and services to support seniors at every stage. The funding from the city will primarily provide Meals on Wheels service to home-bound seniors, but will also provide transportation and programming at local Wellness Centers, in-home personal care to seniors, and volunteer opportunities for retirees through the Foster Grandparent and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.

“As the senior population in the Midlands continues to grow, this funding from the City of Columbia is critical to our mission of helping seniors remain healthy and independent,” said Pam Dukes, Senior Resources executive director. “We are grateful for the city’s partnership in fighting hunger, loneliness and isolation among our elderly neighbors.”

About Senior Resources, Inc.:

Senior Resources is a non-profit organization that coordinates services, provides resources and encourages the personal choices that allow Columbia’s senior citizens to remain independent.  All activities, services and programs of the agency are geared toward promoting independent living, with the goal of helping seniors remain in their homes as long as possible through the support of staff and volunteers, and delaying or preventing the need for institutionalized care.

Since 1967, Senior Resources has served Columbia’s frail and elderly residents in three areas:

1) In-home services, including Meals on Wheels, home care, respite care, senior companion services, and case management;

2) Community-based services, including congregate meals, wellness centers, transportation, and physical fitness;

3) Volunteer services, including the Senior Companion program, Foster Grandparent program, and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.

With local, state and federal government funding, as well as contributions from United Way, personal donations and fundraising activities, Senior Resources offers a variety of programs so that our clients can select the assistance they need to maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle.

The money will be used to help support Senior Resources’ programs, which includes Meals on Wheels, Retired Senior Volunteers Program (RSVP) and In-Home and Community Based Services and Transportation.
