City Receives Project of the Year Award from SC Chapter of American Public Works Association

November 10, 2015

GREENVILLE, SC The City of Greenville received the 2015 Project of the Year award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Public Works Association (SCAPWA) at its annual conference in Myrtle Beach last week. The chapter has 298 members in three branches (Lowcountry, Midlands and Upstate) and its mission is to develop and support the people, agencies and organizations that plan, build, maintain and improve communities in SC. Each year, SCAPWA awards Outstanding Public Works Manager, Outstanding Public Works Employee and Project of the Year. Also honored was Eric Washpon from the City’s Public Works Department, who placed third in the State Championship Backhoe Rodeo, which SCAPWA hosts at the beginning of the conference each year.

The City received the Project of the Year award for the West End Wastewater Improvement Project, which was designed to improve sanitary sewer capacity and support future growth and development in the West End. The scope of the project included installing a half-mile of large diameter wastewater main at a depth of 20 feet, blasting through 14 feet of granite shelf at the deepest point and rerouting existing lines behind the West End Market from private property into City right-of-way to improve access for maintenance. The project was the City’s first in-house design-build wastewater project and was completed in 12 weeks without closing any businesses, Falls Park, the Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities or County Square.
