City Year Columbia announces new director of development and operations

Alton D. Adams, Capital City Club’s Longest Serving Hospitality Professional, Joins City Year Columbia;
Columbia Community Can Welcome Adams to City Year on Wednesday, September 16

COLUMBIA, SC – City Year Columbia, an education-focused, national organization that unites young people for a year of service in high-need schools, names Alton D. Adams Director of Development and Operations. In this role, Adams will lead the organization’s efforts to fully leverage events, communications and stewardship to engage more individuals in City Year’s work in Richland County School District 1 and Lexington County School District Four.

At the upcoming City Year Recognition and Appreciation Reception on Wednesday, September 16, the public can welcome Adams, meet the 2015-2016 City Year AmeriCorps members, Advisory Board, and staff. The reception brings City Year and the community together to celebrate the start of another school year and thank outgoing board members for their service.

“Alton’s natural ability to build authentic relationships with diverse groups of people and coordinate successful events, along with his tremendous energy, make him the perfect fit for City Year’s culture of service and idealism,” said Executive Director and Vice President Dr. Gail Wilson-Giarratano. “His creative spirit and commitment to the community make him the right choice at the right time for our organization.”

Before coming to City Year, Adams worked at The Capital City Club since its beginning. Most recently, Adams has been the highly visible and respected Maître d and Operations Manager. Adams ensured the club was always member-ready with his impeccable attention to detail, consummate diplomacy and personalized approach. He previously led several key departments, including catering sales, membership, and member relations, with proven success.

City Year Columbia deploys 24 City Year AmeriCorps members to serve as full-time tutors and mentors in grades three through nine.
