Columbia Children’s Author to Present at the 5th World Children’s Festival

June 12, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Columbia Children’s Author and Educator, Darla Davenport-Powell is invited to host “The Wonderful World of Imagination” workshop at the 5th World Children’s Festival in Washington, D.C. on July 1, 2015 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. The WCF is a three-day public event from June 30th to July 2nd at the Ellipse next to the White House. Children from 70 countries will perform at the WCF which attracts over 250,000 attendees.

Davenport-Powell’s latest children’s book project, “We Are Friends” embodies the theme of the World Children’s Festival. The WCF’s educational purpose is “to enhance children’s creative potential so they become inspired to work together to propel prosperity, build peace and repair the world.”

“We Are Friends” is an exciting and interactive experience that celebrates the beauty of differences and the joy of friendship. Five kids from different cultures, explore their unique qualities and use their gifts to create an anthem of friendship. We Are Friends is a mirror reflection of the value in all of us and the magic that happens when we accept each other for who we are. Her new book is dedicated to every child that has been bullied, teased or called names. In a letter from Ms. Michelle Obama, Davenport-Powell is encouraged by the First Lady to keep “dreaming big and finding ways to create a better tomorrow.” “We Are Friends” is a story about community and the power that we have when we respect each other’s differences—a simple message that Davenport-Powell wants her young audience to discover; she adds, “My wish is for all children to know that the thing that makes them different, makes them special; and that they are enough!”

“We Are Friends is a love note to children that says no matter the shape, size or color, they matter.”- Lebo M Grammy-Producer, Arranger and Composer, “Voice and Spirit of The Lion King.”
