Columbia city councilman Davis wins Capital City Lake Murray Country Challenge presented by FLW

August 14, 2017

Columbia city councilman Sam Davis and Costa FLW Series pro angler Bradford Beavers of Ridgeville, South Carolina, won the Capital City Lake Murray Country Challenge presented by FLW bass-fishing tournament Sunday after bringing two fish to the scale weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces. For his victory Davis won $500 for his charity – the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

The event marked just one of many events that happened throughout the week at the Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The event featured four Columbia, South Carolina dignitaries paired with six different FLW Tour pros, each competing for $500 to be donated to the charity of their choice. The tournament launched out of Dreher Island State Park in Prosperity and the teams weighed in on the Bass & BBQ stage outside the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

Despite the record catch being caught by the pros competing in the Forrest Wood Cup, fishing was tough for the local dignitaries as just two of the four teams competing caught fish.

The top two teams finished the tournament in:

1st:          Columbia City Councilman Sam Davis and pro Bradford Beavers, two bass, 6-7 (Charity: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority)

2nd:         Lexington County Councilman Todd Cullum and pro James Watson, one bass, 1-10, (Charity: PETS, Inc.)

Also competing in the tournament were:

3rd:         Richland County Councilman Bill Malinowski and pro Bryan New (Charity: Mental Illness Recovery Center, Inc.)

4th:         South Carolina Director of State Parks Phil Gaines and pro Allen Boyd (Charity: Harvest Hope)

The complete weigh-in was livestreamed on the FLW Facebook page and can be watched at: Facebook.com/FLWFishing.

Lake Murray and the Columbia area are a very familiar destination for FLW. The city has played host to the 2008, 2014 and 2017 Forrest Wood Cups and numerous FLW-sanctioned tournaments. The 2017 Forrest Wood Cup marked the 22nd anniversary of the championship event.
