Congressman Trey Gowdy to Address Spartanburg Community College Graduates

SPARTANBURG, SC – May 2, 2012 – South Carolina’s 4th District Representative,Trey Gowdy, will deliver the commencement address at SpartanburgCommunity College’s (SCC) graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 5, from10am-1pm, at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.
 
“Representative Gowdy is a strong supporter of reinvigorating ournation’s economy through education,” said Henry Giles, SCC’s interimpresident. “We are honored to have him address our students on thismomentous occasion.”
 
Born and raised in Upstate, South Carolina, Gowdy graduated fromSpartanburg High School in 1982, Baylor University in 1986, and theUniversity of South Carolina School of Law in 1989, where he was amember of the scholastic honor society “Order of the Wig and Robe”. Heserved as a federal prosecutor in Greenville for six years. During thistime, Gowdy was awarded the Postal Inspector’s Award and received thehighest performance rating a federal prosecutor can receive for twoyears in a row. He was elected as the 7th Circuit Solicitor in 2000 andwas re-elected in 2004 and 2008. In 2010, Gowdy, a member of theRepublican Party, was elected as South Carolina’s 4th DistrictRepresentative and is running for re-election in 2012. Gowdy is marriedto Terri Dillard Gowdy and has two children, Watson and Abigail.
 
SCC is projected to award 841 students with associate degrees, diplomasand certificates for the 2011-2012 academic year. Based on recent data,approximately 85 percent of these students will find employment in theirarea of study or transfer to a four-year college or university. Soon tobe graduates, Randall Josh Wheeler and Yevgeniy Ulanov are two of manyshining examples of this fact.
 
Randall Josh Wheeler, of Chesnee, is the first person in his family toattend college and will graduate from SCC’s University Transfer programwith an associate in science degree. Wheeler served as the vicepresident of Beta Sigma Psi, SCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and wasnamed to the Phi Theta Kappa All-State Academic Team. His academicachievements and extra-curricular activities landed Wheeler asignificant scholarship to Wofford College, where he’ll earn hisbachelor’s degree in computer science.
 
Yevgeniy Ulanov, of Inman, immigrated to the United States from Russiawith his family in 2002. After living in California for a few years,they moved to South Carolina where Ulanov attended Dorman High School.In the 11th grade, he decided to enter SCC’s Link program, now calledGateway to College, which allowed him to earn college credits while hefinished high school. While at SCC, Ulanov was accepted into theTechnical & Health Scholars program, which gave him the opportunityto work part time at Michelin while taking classes SCC. He was alsoinducted into the academic honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, for hisconsistently high grade point average. Now at age 18, Ulanov isgraduating with an associate degree in applied science in electronicsengineering technology and has already secured a great position atMichelin as an automation technician.
 
“We’re very proud of all of our students who have achieved theiracademic goals while here at SCC,” said Giles. “We wish them all thebest and continuous success in their future endeavors.”
