March 13, 2017

Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine was recognized by the National League of Cities’ University (NLC University) for reaching the gold level in its Certificate Program. Sponsored by the National League of Cities, the award was announced on Friday, March 11 in Washington, DC at the annual Shared Wisdom Luncheon at the Congressional City Conference.

“I am both honored and humbled to receive this esteemed honor from the National League of Cities. I truly feel that it is my duty as a public servant to attend training seminars and workshops that will provide me with knowledge that I can use to become a better leader and to empower citizens in Columbia.  I am committed to bringing best practices to my hometown,”  Devine stated.

Councilwoman Devine is one of the few NLC members to have reached the gold level in the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership program since its inception. To reach the gold level, a local official must earn 50 credits, taking seminars that encompass all four proficiency areas of the Certificate Programcurriculum: Management, Leadership, Engagement and Expertise.

Each training seminar addresses one or more of the core areas of municipal leadership, including personal leadership growth and development, effective governance, effective communications, skills in developing and promoting partnerships and managing change.

NLC is committed to strengthening and promoting the leadership capacity of our nation’s local elected officials. As part of the NLC mission to create stronger communities, its training program provides local officials with the professional development opportunities to assist them in promoting positive change and innovation within their communities. At the same time, seminars are designed to explore the nature and practice of local governmental leadership.

The Certificate Program was created in 1999 with the primary purpose to recognize and acknowledge excellence in leadership by NLC members.

The National League of Cities is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
