Dear Debby and Jerry,
I am a real fan of online dating and have met some very nice ladies. I am dating someone special right now and things are going great. We’ve been together for 6 months. My question? The holidays are upon us and I was wondering how much would be appropriate to spend on a Christmas gift for someone you have been dating for 6 months? I’m not talking a ring, at least not yet, but do want to buy her a nice piece of jewelry. Any ideas or suggestions?

That is a difficult question to answer, as it would depend upon your financial situation. I would not suggest going overboard, but it does sound like you two are serious. Therefore, I would be generous and consider a lovely necklace or bracelet. You might try to find out what her favorite stone is so that you can personalize the gift.

Are all men pigs? I know that’s a cliché, but sometimes I wonder. Internet dating has been good to me, and I’ve met some nice men, but the relationships I’ve had have not been successful. The last guy just broke up with me through email, citing he did not want a serious relationship. Well, he should have thought of that before it got serious. I need some good, solid advice.

I know it’s easy to render all men pigs, but really they are not. There are plenty of nice ones out there; it just takes patience and sometimes altering your expectations a little. By no means do I suggest you compromise your principals and values, but perhaps you are being a bit rigid. Look for attributes in a man that involve character, morality, kindness, and responsibility. These characteristics trump looks, sexiness, charisma, and bravado. Give it a try with a different attitude and you may be pleasantly surprised.
