Eli Horner of Chapin High School has been selected as the recipient of the National Merit Wofford College Scholarship announced on Monday by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. There were 1.5 million National Merit entrants of which only 50,000 were selected as qualified and only 7,500 were selected as National Merit winners.

“We are so proud of Eli for earning this scholarship. I know he will continue to do great things in college and beyond,” Chapin High School principal Dr. Akil Ross said.

This year, 184 higher education institutions underwrote Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 106 private and 78 public institutions located in 45 states and the District of Columbia. College-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners are a part of the distinguished group of high school seniors who will receive National Merit Scholarships for college undergraduate study worth approximately $33 million.

Earlier this year, Chapin High School student Jamie Milliff and Irmo High School students Tanay Singh and Thomas Birdsong were honored with National Merit Scholarships.

“We are proud and excited for all of our National Merit Scholarship winners,” District Five Chief Instruction Officer Dr. Christina Melton said. “We know that they worked very hard for this honor and this is just the beginning of a bright future for each winner.
