Donors give over 237 pints at Columbia Lifesavers blood drive

March 2, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC — Thanks to the generosity of donors, the American Red Cross collected 237 pints of blood at the Columbia Lifesavers blood drive February 27th, bringing the five-year event total to 1,391 pints of blood.

Mayor Steve Benjamin, the city of Columbia, and the Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region Board of Directors joined forces for this year’s drive in an effort to raise community awareness about the need for blood. The event was held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln St.

“It’s incredibly heartening and humbling to see so many people from all different walks of life not only willing but eager to give of themselves in service to others,” said Mayor Benjamin. “It speaks volumes about our community and proves without a doubt that Columbia is a city of heroes. I thank God for the American Red Cross and everyone who came together to make this year’s Lifesavers blood drive a success.”

Ryan Corcoran, community CEO of the Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region, thanked the mayor, the city of Columbia, and the South Carolina Blood Services Region Board of Directors and the community for continuing the tradition of the Columbia Lifesavers blood drive.

“This year’s Columbia Lifesavers blood drive is a great example of how the community can come together to make a difference in patients’ lives,” Corcoran said. “Thank you to all the donors who rolled up a sleeve and became heroes to patients in need.”

The blood drive comes at an important time of year for the Red Cross. Winter weather and seasonal illnesses such as flu can cause a decline in blood donations. But the need for blood is constant. The Red Cross encourages eligible donors to make a commitment to giving blood regularly to ensure enough blood is available when patients need it, no matter the season.
