Dorn VA Medical Center “Summer of Service” open house/town hall

June 29, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Williams Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center will host an open house from 4:30 to 6 p.m. followed by a town hall from 6 to 7 p.m., Monday, June 29.

The open house will take place in the main hospital lobby and adjoining areas of Bldg. 100 and 100A.
Representatives from more than 20 areas of the Veterans Health Administration and Veterans Benefits Administration will be present. The Columbia VA Regional Office will participate and will have individualized claims assistance available. Also, staff from the mobile Vet Center and Fort Jackson National Cemetery will be on hand.

But the true topic of the open house is to provide information about being a volunteer at Dorn VAMC. The public is invited, especially Veterans and their families who have questions or concerns and want to learn more about volunteering at Dorn VA or one of its seven community-based outpatient clinics.
As the open house winds down, a town hall gathering will take place in nearby building 5, in the auditorium. Leadership of Dorn will provide an update and forecast on service; an overview of recent and future hiring initiatives; spur increased local engagement; and welcome members of the community interested in supporting the needs of Veterans.

Additionally, Dorn VAMC staff members will be available to assist Veterans in registering with Veterans Affairs.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald said, “We have made progress over the past year addressing the challenges we face in delivering care and benefits to millions of veterans and their families. While there is more work to do to honor our commitment to veterans, we also recognize that VA cannot do it alone. We are asking Americans everywhere to join the Summer of Service and help us give back to those who have given so much to our nation.”
