January 26, 2011

SPARTANBURG, SC – Dr. Charles Love, dean of the School of Education at the University of South Carolina Upstate, has been named to the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Board of Examiners Advisory Panel. He was also appointed to the Unit Accreditation Board of NCATE as the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) representative to that board.

The overarching goals of the Board of Examiners Advisory Panel is to increase the rigor of Board of Examiners (BOE) training, enhancing the quality of BOE work, and ensuring the fidelity of unit accreditation. The panel will provide guidance on BOE related initiatives which include the development of the Accreditation Learning Management System with programs that support learning and monitor performance of BOE candidates and BOE members, and the refinement of continuous improvement and transformative imitative accreditation options. The panel will meet electronically and through NCATE sponsored events such as Institutional Orientations and NCATE sessions at AACTE annual meetings. This panel will present at the BOE update session at the 2011 American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education Annual Conference.

The Unit Accreditation Board of NCATE determines the accreditation status of professional education units at colleges and universities. It is responsible for developing standards and procedures for the accreditation of professional education units, and oversees on-site visits to institutions, the training of the Board of Examiners (BOE), the data bank, and annual reports. The board is composed of teachers, representatives from teacher education, state and local policy makers, professionals from specialty areas, student organizations, and from the public at-large.

NCATE, authorized by the U.S. Department of Education, determines whether schools, colleges, and departments of education meet rigorous national standards in preparing teachers and other school professionals for the classroom. NCATE works to help establish high quality teacher preparation through the process of professional accreditation of schools, colleges and departments of education.
