Mr. Potato Head to make a special appearance at literacy-focused event

COLUMBIA, SC – As a leader in promoting early literacy, EdVenture Children’s Museum will participate in an assembly for students at Horrell Hill Elementary on Monday, Sept. 14, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. International Paper is providing funding for 1200 books to be distributed to students at Horrell Hill Elementary and Dominion Carolina Gas Transmission is providing family museum passes to each student.

The educational event will begin with an engaging introduction and a special character appearance by Mr. Potato Head.  Students will enjoy the reading of a story and a science demonstration by EdVenture Educators.  EdVenture will distribute books to each student and Karen Coltrane, president and CEO of EdVenture, will present 600 museum family passes to Parthenia Satterwhite, principal of Horrell Hill Elementary.

“The importance of early childhood literacy cannot be overstated,” said Coltrane.  “We know that simply putting books in the hands of children promotes reading.  The more we encourage literacy early on in life, the more prepared South Carolina’s future workforce will be prepared to excel.  EdVenture is excited to invite all the families of Horrell Hill Elementary to see The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD at the museum before the exhibit closes on September 20.”

Dominion Carolina Gas Transmission is sponsoring the assembly and Dominion employees will volunteer at the event to assist with the hands-on science demonstration and to escort the special character.

“Dominion Carolina Gas Transmission is proud to support EdVenture and the advancement of scientific studies at Horrell Hill Elementary School,” said Keith Windle, general manager for Dominion Carolina Gas Transmission.  “We look forward to bringing Mr. Potato Head and encouraging scientific exploration through play and study.”

EdVenture has been promoting literacy and STEM education for children of all ages since 2003. EdVenture has distributed over 1500 books to children in the Midlands this year. EdVenture’s literacy programs promote family engagement, expanded vocabularies, imagination and better communication skills.
