Ethics Commission Hearing Scheduled in Complaint Against Former Town Clerk

September 29, 2014

CHAPIN, SC – The Town of Chapin received notification from the South Carolina Ethics Commission that there is probable cause to support allegations that former Chapin Town Clerk Adrienne Thompson knowingly used her official employment to obtain an economic interest for a family member, and a formal hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 19 at 12:30 pm in Suite 250, 5000 Thurmond Mall, The Pavilion, Columbia, SC 29201.

According to the letter from Herbert Hayden, the Commission’s Executive Director, the Commission considered the complaint against Mrs. Thompson at a meeting held on September 17, 2014, and determined probable cause exists to support the alleged violations, pursuant to Section 8-13-320(10)9i), Code of Laws, South Carolina, 1976, as amended. The hearing will review allegations on three counts of using her position as town clerk/treasurer to hire her son for miscellaneous jobs for the town.

Thompson was relieved of her duties on July 5, 2014, after a 10-week suspension for suspected allegations of misappropriation of town funds, unauthorized and excessive purchasing, improper financial reporting, ethics violations, and nepotism.  A SLED investigation continues on Thompson’s actions as well.
