Multi-instrumentalist Stachia Simmons Got Her Start At Age Two

June 26 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

In the heart of Goose Creek, South Carolina, amidst a family deeply rooted in music, a prodigious talent emerged at the tender age of two—Stachia Simmons, known to the world as Sta.La.V. Her journey from the church pews to the spotlight of jazz and beyond is as inspiring as it is melodious.

Stachia’s musical odyssey began with the rhythmic heartbeat of the drums in her hometown church. From those early beats, she honed her skills, mastering not just the drums but a plethora of instruments that would soon become her palette for musical expression.

On June 26th at 6 pm, Charleston Jazz proudly presents Sta.La.V. as the headliner for the highly anticipated Art of Jazz concert at the prestigious Gibbes Museum. This event promises to be a celebration of her eclectic talents, showcasing a fusion of Soul, Jazz, Gospel, Funk, and Reggae—all delivered with her signature flair and improvisational creativity. Joining Stachia on stage are LaToya Renea on keys and Chris Shecut on saxophone.

In her Art of Jazz performance, Stachia will create a musical story inspired by the works of notable artists. From Cuban-American painter Reynier Llanes’ Dear Dad and I Nurture a White Rose, to South Carolinian Merton Simpson’s Grand Dance, the collision of art and music creates an immersive listening experience that can’t be seen anywhere else.

Stachia’s career has been punctuated by collaborations with notable figures in the gospel industry and beloved Lowcountry musicians such as Quiana Parler and Charlton Singleton. Her artistry transcends genres, effortlessly blending the sacred and the secular, the traditional and the contemporary.

Among her many accolades is her collaboration with national jazz saxophonist Paul Shiltz, a testament to her versatility and appeal across diverse musical landscapes. Whether she’s captivating audiences with the soulful strains of Gospel or the improvisational brilliance of Jazz, Sta.La.V. consistently delivers performances that resonate deeply with listeners as she strives to spread joy and peace.

“I want to be able to be that peace … whether it makes them feel good and dance, or even makes them cry, sometimes crying is very therapeutic because we hold so much in, just letting all of that go and enjoying the moment.” —Stachia Simmons (SOURCE: Charleston City Paper Interview)

For those fortunate enough to attend the Art of Jazz concert, expect a night where musical boundaries blur and creativity knows no limits. Sta.La.V. invites you to join her on a musical journey that spans genres and emotions, promising an unforgettable evening in the Holy City’s premier art museum. The event is made possible in part by Monster Music and Movies and Charleston Magazine. Jessamine and Vine will provide wine for purchase at the event, and The Establishment will showcase delicious light bites.

As Sta.La.V. takes center stage at the Gibbes Museum, her performance will undoubtedly be a testament to the power of music to unite, inspire, and uplift. Don’t miss your chance to witness this exceptional artist as she continues to redefine what it means to be a multi-instrumentalist and musical innovator. The evening promises to be nothing short of magical.
