Creating (and Combating) Addictive User Experiences

March 21 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Social media sites are meant to be addictive, and that isn’t accidental. It’s not a user’s fault they have fallen into an endless pit of scrolling.

The Truth Behind Social Media Addiction
Although social media can be a positive medium, the harm still outweighs the benefits. Social media’s user experience has caused a rise in anxiety, stress, fear of missing out (FOMO), loneliness, and addiction.

Kimanh Le, a 2nd year PhD student in health promotion, education, and behavior at the University of South Carolina, uncovers why poor mental health has increased exponentially, especially in children and young adults.

Kimanh will lay bare psychological and social reasons why some users are more addicted to social media than others, the role design plays in shaping their behavior, and discuss ways to avoid creating addictive designs.
