South Carolina: Sometimes You Like It, Sometimes You Don’t
March 12, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Sunday, March 12 a special program will be presented at the Laurens County Public Library (1017 West Main Street, Laurens SC).
From 2-4 pm, the Friends of the Library will host “South Carolina: Sometimes We Like It, Sometimes We Don’t” presented by Aïda Rogers, editor, and instructor at the South Carolina Honors College, University of South Carolina. Her articles have won national and regional awards. She writes her “Everything and Nothing” column from an old home in Columbia and a new porch in McClellanville.
Ms. Rogers is the creator and editor of State of the Heart: South Carolina Writers on the Places They Love (University of South Carolina Press), a three-volume anthology series that includes stories by 108 Palmetto State writers.
For this program Ms. Rogers will be joined by three contributors to the anthology: Vernon Burton, professor of Global Black Studies at Clemson University, Kristine Hartvigsen, journalist, currently working in marketing at Piedmont Technical College and Kendra Hamilton, poet, and professor of English at Presbyterian College. Reflecting on fading farms, small hometowns, obscure eating places, grand and crumbling sports arenas, lakes and rivers, islands and mountains, country roads, and places that no longer exist, this program will offer a deeper look into why South Carolina is the way it is.
This program is brought to you in part by a grant from South Carolina Humanities. It is free and open to the public.
