Exhibit to feature art of students who are deaf and blind

July 14, 2015

CHARLESTON, SC – Sculpture, paintings, and drawings created by students with a very unique perspective will be exhibited at the Charleston Community Foundation’s offices July 1- Sept. 30.

The foundation has invited students from the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind to showcase their work. All of the students are either deaf or blind and represent counties throughout the state. The Spartanburg-based school serves students statewide through its campus and outreach programs, and recently opened an outreach center in Charleston.

“Our students observe the world around them with a very different perspective,” said Ann Akerman, chief executive officer of The Walker Foundation, the school’s fundraising arm. “Their art reflects their unique experiences as well as the ingenuity and drive they demonstrate every day. We’re very appreciative for the opportunity to share their creations with the Charleston community.”

The public is invited to visit the exhibit at the Charleston Community Foundation at 635 Rutledge Avenue, Suite 201. The office is open from 9-5 Monday – Friday. Large groups are asked to schedule visits in advance by calling 843-723-3635.

“Every few months, we are excited to receive new art in our gallery and to serve as a venue for talented artists,” said Richard Hendry, interim president and chief executive officer of Coastal Community Foundation. “This month, we are proud to feature artwork from the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind, providing another platform to educate members of our community about the importance of the school and to showcase the student’s work.
