This weekend we celebrate our mom’s and all of the love, wisdom and support they’ve given us, and honor all of their hard work.

Mothers are unsung heroes of daily life, and after working with a few of them I learned they often look and feel like front-line defenders. From stained tops and yoga pants to diaper bags and maternity clothes moms often struggle with maintaining their image pushing it to the bottom of the list. Here are a few style tips for mom’s, but applies to all of us, that are quick and easy ways to look and feel pulled together, not apart:

1.   Ditch the baggy clothes. They may be roomy, comfortable and offer a sense of security by burying your body, but wearing clothes that are too big for you make you look bigger. Instead of size opt for stretch. You may not be happy with your body but covering it in baggy layers isn’t doing your psyche any favors. Pieces with stretch are still comfortable and will skim your body making it instantly look smaller.

2.   Mom (and Dad) jeans. In the past these were light washed, peg-legged and possibly pleated, but now they are low-rise, boot-cut jeans that create a muffin-top and expose your crack. If you’re going to be moving a lot in your jeans or just want a more flattering silhouette for your tummy, they need to be secure. This means opting for a mid-rise or high-waist version. By sitting higher they won’t push up your stomach or ride low in the back giving you full coverage when you sit down or bend over.

3.   The well-worn sneakers. While you may be chasing after little ones all day, you can do so in something other than your gym shoes. Flats, slippers, or even fashion sneakers offer the same mobility and comfort with a lot more style. If you only change one thing with your outfit, change your shoes. They will reinvent your look.

4.   The permanent ponytail. A staple for moms with long hair who refuse to cut it short into a ‘mom ‘do’, the ponytail is utilitarian and lifeless. Even though it’s easy and keeps your hair out of your face, there are other options. Headbands, hats, braids or a chignon serve the same purpose and offer variety and style. We all know moms are pushed for time so another huge hair saver is dry shampoo. It’s easy and works instantly.

Whether you’re a mom or not, striving to balance life and style is never-ending and oftentimes your style loses. That doesn’t need to be the case. It just takes prioritizing and sacrifice, something moms know well.
