Fiber Optics Training & Certification Comes To Tri-County’s Easley Campus June 18

EASLEY, SC – June 18, 2012 – Tri-County Technical College’s Corporate & Community Education Division, in association with BDI Datalynk, is bringing Certified Fiber Optics Technician training to the tri-county area. A series of training and certification sessions will begin June 18. Registration is now open. Classes will be held at the Easley Campus.
The first course is designed for individuals who want to become Certified Fiber Optics Technicians (CFOT). This three-day course will be held June 18 – 20. The certification exam will be given on the final class day. The cost for the course and certification is $725, which includes all course materials and books. Basic computer knowledge is required.
The second, more advanced course will be a two-day program, set for June 21 and 22, for individuals wishing to become a Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance (CFOS/T). This certification course focuses on the testing and maintenance of single-mode networks. With emphasis on the OLTS and OTDR, this course presents extreme, real-world challenges to the student. The cost for this course and certification is $675. Individuals enrolling should have already completed the CFOT course or other formal fiber optics training within the previous six months, or have at least one year of fiber optics-related experience.
A third course, Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Splicing (CFOS/S), is planned for June 23 and 24. This certification course focuses on mechanical and fusion splicing of fiber optics networks. The student will build his or her own fiber network using a variety of mechanical and fusion splicing techniques. The cost for this course and certification is $675.
The Certified Fiber Optic Technician Certificate program is sanctioned by the Fiber Optic Association (FOA) and accredited by BICSI (Building Industry Consulting Service International). BICSI now services the needs of all professionals who work in the information technology systems (ITS) industry.
Fiber optics technology makes use of optical fiber, a glass or plastic fiber designed to guide light along its length.
A fiber optics technician maintains fiber optic cable systems that carry both voice and digital transmissions. Fiber optics technicians are persons in charge of working with optical fibers and cables which are used in sending and receiving communications data. They splice and fuse fibers, install cables beneath the ground and in the different parts of building structures, so that these could be used for telecommunications and other forms of communication.
