Yes, it’s that time of year. Women generally love Valentine’s Day and men, well, not so much.

Therefore, I’m offering some tips to improve your relationship with your sweetie whatever time of year it is.

1. Make your sweetheart feel appreciated.

Sounds so obvious, doesn’t it? Does your man always make sure that your car is in good working order so that you will have a safe and comfortable car to drive? Do you thank him for it or just assume that he knows you appreciate it?

2. Focus on what your partner does that’s right rather than wrong.

Everyone has habits that drive their partner crazy – toilet seat left up, the newspaper all mangled after it’s been read, or  — I hate to say it — nagging. Instead of focusing on those things, why don’t you look at all the good things he or she does for you every day?

3. Ask yourself how you are contributing to your relationship to make it less than ideal.

If your relationship with your significant other is a little shaky, it’s really easy to play the blame game. It’s tempting, but don’t do it. Have a tough love talk with yourself and look at what you could do in the future that’s more considerate and loving.

4. Be mindful of how you speak to your spouse.

Instead of demanding that your husband take out the trash when he’s in the middle of watching the Lady Gamecocks; why don’t you say something like, “Sweetie, would you mind taking the trash out sometime tonight before we go to bed?”

5. Don’t put them on a pedestal that they can’t stand on.

Frequently, you may ask your sweetie to accomplish certain tasks she just can’t do.   When you do this, you are the only one let down and not her. Remember, why you fell in love with her and do not try to change your sweetie into a completely different person.  Know her limits and work within that range.
