Foundation for a Greater Greenwood County supports GSSM’s Accelerate virtual engineering program

August 17, 2016

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) received a $10,000 investment from the Foundation for a Greater Greenwood County in support of GSSM’s virtual engineering program, Accelerate.

Originally launched with private support from companies across the state, Accelerate is currently funded through a combination of private gifts and public funds, thanks to the SC General Assembly. The three-year program stresses mastery of the foundational tools of engineering, such as physics, calculus and chemistry, but also places significant emphasis on real-world, team-based projects, creativity and communication.

Accelerate allows students to remain in their home high schools while taking dual-enrollment college courses from GSSM and Clemson University faculty. Classes are live and delivered virtually through computer and audio/visual equipment provided and maintained by GSSM. The program also includes weekend and summer activities and camps.

“We are excited to bring Accelerate to Greenwood County and grateful for the support of the Foundation for a Greater Greenwood County,” said Kim Bowman, CEO, GSSM Foundation and EVP Strategic Direction, GSSM. “Thanks to their generous investment in our leading-edge program, Accelerate can now cultivate our state’s next generation of engineers who hail from Greenwood County.”

During the 2016-2017 school year, Accelerate will be offered to students across Greenwood County through a partnership with Greenwood School District 50.

“A solid understanding of science and math with real-world applications is critical for success in the modern day workplace. We are happy to support GSSM’s virtual engineering program and provide the opportunity for students in Greenwood School District 50 to participate,” said Jim Pfeiffer, Chairman, Foundation for a Greater Greenwood County.
