March 13, 2024

Tax season can be stressful, especially for individuals and families who may not have the means to afford professional tax preparation services. However, thanks to the United Way of Laurens County, there’s a solution that won’t break the bank. The Free Tax Preparation program, managed by Alma Worthy and Shea Bradberry, offers a helping hand to those who qualify, ensuring that taxes are done accurately and at no cost.

The program, aptly named Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), targets individuals and families with a household income of less than $60,000 a year. It’s a vital resource for many in the community, providing much-needed relief during tax season.

But how does it work?

There are several convenient site locations available for individuals to access this service. These include the United Way of Laurens County (offering drop-off and pick-up services), United Ministries of Clinton (offering in-person assistance), and SC Empowerment in Gray Court (also offering drop-off and pick-up services). To schedule a time, simply call 211 and and scheduling an appointment. During the call, individuals can specify which site they would like to visit.

But what documents are needed to take advantage of this service?

The process is made easy with a checklist provided by the program. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Social Security cards and/or ITIN cards for the taxpayer, spouse, and dependents listed on the return.
  • Photo ID for the taxpayer and spouse (if married filing jointly).
  • Birth dates for the taxpayer, spouse, and dependents.
  • All income statements, including W-2, 1099, 1099-R, Social Security Benefits Statement, and any other income sources.
  • Tuition statement (1098-T) and related expenses from college or technical school.
