Girl Rising at Furman University

GREENVILLE, SC – October 3, 2013 – The Upstate community is invited to attend a screening of Girl Rising on Thursday, October 10th at 7 p.m. at Burgiss Theater, in cooperation with the Riley Institute® at Furman University.  The screening aims to raise awareness on the importance of educating girls.  Girl Rising is a groundbreaking feature film that spotlights the stories of nine unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances. The film captures their dreams, their voices and their remarkable lives.  Girl Rising aims to raise global visibility about the importance of educating girls.

Maurie Lawrence, a graduate of the Diversity Leaders Initiative and co-sponsor of the event said, “I believe in the power of education to change not only a girl, but the world.” “Please attend this screening of Girl Rising, and learn, be inspired, connect with others and, therefore, demonstrate our community’s commitment to breaking down the barriers that prevent girls around the world from going to school ­ barriers like child marriage, sex trafficking, gender violence and discrimination.”

The screening will be followed by a brief discussion led by Dr. Liz Smith, a professor of political science at Furman University.  Additional information will be made available for those attending and wanting more information on what individuals can do to learn more on this significant global issue.  The event is scheduled to conclude at 9 p.m.  There is no cost to attend, no pre-registration required.  To learn more about Girl Rising including a trailer to the film, visit girlrising.com.
