Green Living: Energy Saving Tips from Santee Cooper Green

April 10, 2009

MONCKS CORNER, SC – April 10, 2009 – Santee Cooper sold more than 24,000 megawatt hours (MWhs) of Green Power in 2008 directly to 2,325 customers and to an additional 3,718 customers through the state’s 20 electric cooperatives.

If you’ve thought about joining the ranks of this green team but have been putting it off, Santee Cooper is sweetening the deal by giving new Green Power customers who sign up by the end of July a free snooze button for your computer monitor. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends shutting off your monitor if you’re going to be away from your computer for more than 20 minutes, and with this handy tool a simple push of the button will shave a little off your energy bill.

Santee Cooper generated more than 77,000 MWhs of Green Power in 2008 from renewable landfill-biogas and solar energy. Green Power is available for residential customers in blocks of 100 kilowatt hours at $3 per block. Every dollar of Green Power sales is reinvested into future renewable projects in South Carolina.

“No utility has done more than Santee Cooper to advance renewable energy in South Carolina,” says Vice President of Retail Operations Zack Dusenbury, “Our Green Power customers are a vital part of that. When our customers purchase renewable Green Power, generated since 2001 in our landfill generating stations, that money supports programs such as Green Power Solar Schools and new initiatives with our Palmetto Wind Research Project.”
