GSSM Celebrates STEM Education with Two Brand New Summer Enrichment Opportunities for Middle Schoolers from Across the State

HARTSVILLE, SC – July 19, 2011 – For the first time, the SCGovernor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is hosting a pairof unique, new, residential summer camps designed to introduce middleschool students from across South Carolina to challenging, yet fun,Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning opportunities.

Both camps kicked off Sunday, July 17 at GSSM’s Hartsville campus and will conclude on Saturday, July 23.

Camp 1 – From Middle School to College (FMSTC)

Funded by the US Department of Education, FMSTC is a five-yearreadiness initiative designed to identify and enhance the STEM skills oftalented rising 8th graders from low performing schools across thestate. One hundred students from 16 different middle schools wereselected to participate. Throughout the week, the students will work onscientific and mathematical investigations that will assist them inanswering the question: How do you set up a race car for topperformance? Twelve FMSTC Race Teams will wrap up their week with a racechallenge at the Darlington Raceway Saturday, July 23, 8:30-11:30 a.m.  There will be two heats beginning at 10:45 a.m. FMSTC teachers hailfrom six different SC middle and high schools.

Camp 2 – gpod

Funded by a grant from Google, Inc.’s Charitable Giving Fund at theTides Foundation, gpod (grow, produce & develop) is a three-yearprogram designed to inspire rising 8th graders from Berkeley County topursue studies and careers in STEM fields by solving real-world researchchallenges through hands-on experiments. This week, students arelooking at how cars use energy and how things like driving style andgears affect that energy. The long-term goal of gpod is to grow SouthCarolina talent, produce tangible academic results, and develop skilledand knowledgeable leadership for our state’s future. In addition todaily camp activities, gpod will wrap up with team presentationsSaturday, July 23, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the GSSM campus.
