Habitat’s Abigail Springs neighborhood built on business, community support

January 26, 2016

TAYLORS, SC – Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County has completed construction on Abigail Springs, Greenville County’s first mixed-income development with a 100% focus on home ownership for residents of all income levels.

Construction began on the development in 2010, and was completed by the end of 2015. Habitat Greenville has built a total of 24 homes in the neighborhood, while nonprofit Homes of Hope is responsible for the construction of eight additional homes in the development. Residents of Abigail Springs are first-time homeowners who have been prepared for sustainable homeownership through Habitat Greenville’s program of sweat equity and educational preparation.

During the course of its construction, the development received several awards for its novel approach to neighborhood revitalization, including the Greenville Chamber of Commerce Max Heller Neighborhood Improvement Award in 2015. The annual award honors an individual or non-profit organization for their achievement in improving a neighborhood or community through physical appearance of the area, human development of the residents, or other efforts that improve quality of life.

The completion of the award-winning development was made possible in large part through the commitment and dedication of Habitat Greenville’s community and corporate partners. While each Habitat home is built through the support of a sponsor or sponsors, the unique neighborhood model of Abigail Springs allowed Habitat partners to support multiple homes within the development. Full build partners, those who supported the complete construction of one or more homes in the neighborhood, included Greenville Health System, Faith Build partners, the Golden Strip Church Coalition, Michelin, Rotary District 7750, SC Telco, ScanSource, Thrivent Financial, and Wells Fargo.

Several of the homes in the development were also the work of Habitat Greenville’s CEO Builds, an annual build partnership that brings together CEOs from businesses across the community to support the construction of a Habitat home through financial donations and volunteer hours.

“We could not have undertaken this project without the continuous support of the business and faith community in Greenville,” said Monroe Free, Executive Director of Habitat Greenville. “The sustainability of this project shows their dedication to neighborhood improvement in the place we all call home. Abigail Springs is a true community project.”
