Harvest Hope Food Bank and Food Lion Feeds Partner to Provide Nearly 30,000 Meals For Children At Risk of Summer Hunger in Columbia, SC

July 20, 2015

Meals Will Be Distributed At Bethlehem Baptist Church Wiley Kennedy Family Life Center

COLUMBIA, SC – On Saturday, July 25, Food Lion Feeds, through Harvest Hope, will distribute more than 30,000 meals to children facing daily hunger this summer. The distribution will take place from 11a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bethlehem Baptist Church’s Wiley Kennedy Life Center located at 1037 Eastman Street in Columbia. Food Lion Associates and volunteers from Bethlehem Baptist Church will pack the food on site at the Wiley Kennedy Life Center from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., and then begin to distribute to children and families coming from the surrounding communities, with a goal to distribute to 650 children. One package will contain fresh produce while the other will contain grains, proteins and other shelf stable items.

In addition to the food donation, Food Lion Feeds is also providing Harvest Hope with $2,500 to go towards its BackPack program. Through Harvest Hope’s BackPack Program, children are provided seven child friendly, shelf stable meals to take home from school each Friday. Summer break can be a difficult time for children who suffer from daily food insecurity. During the school year, children who qualify for the free or reduced breakfast and lunch program have access to nutritious meals. The Harvest Hope-Food Lion Feeds partnership will help children in downtown Columbia have meals they may miss at school.
