HRP Associates engineers to participate in “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day”

GREENVILLE, SC – HRP Associates Inc. (HRP), an environmental and civil engineering and hydrogeology firm in Greenville, will participate in “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” at AJ Whittenberg Elementary School of Engineering in Greenville on March 23, as planned by the Western Carolina Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Held annually across the nation, “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” is part of a larger educational movement sponsored by DiscoverE, the foundation started by the National Society of Professional Engineers as a formal national call to engineer volunteers for engagement in K-12 education. Activities are planned to help young girls view the engineering field positively and encourage their interest in a STEM career path.

Susan Schlangen and Laura Lopez-Sosa, both project engineers for HRP, will join female engineering professionals from across the Upstate to lead groups of fourth grade female students at A.J. Whittenberg in a breakfast discussion of their work and education, as well as a project constructing and launching rockets together. Serita Acker, program director of Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), a forward-thinking mentoring program at Clemson University, will serve as the keynote speaker.

“Sharing my experiences with these students as a woman in engineering is rewarding for both me and the future of the field,” said Susan Schlangen. “These girls are curious to learn about my daily job activities and eager to apply their own creativity in various opportunities that make the world safer, cleaner and healthier.”
