Indie Grits to receive $15,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $30 million in grants as part of the NEA’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $15,000 to Indie Grits to assist with the festival’s film competition, including filmmaker awards and travel expenses for filmmakers. The Art Works category focuses on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts.
“The arts are for all of us, and by supporting organizations such as Indie Grits, the National Endowment for the Arts is providing more opportunities for the public to engage with the arts,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “Whether in a theater, a town square, a museum, or a hospital, the arts are everywhere and make our lives richer.”
“We are grateful for this support because it assists us with prioritizing our filmmakers and making sure that as many filmmakers as possible are at the festival to interact with other filmmakers and our audiences. This funding also ensures that we’re able to give out monetary awards for excellent films in several categories,” said Seth Gadsden, co-curator of Indie Grits.
Indie Grits, April 20-23, 2017, is the annual film and culture festival for DIY media makers, hosted by the Nickelodeon Theatre. In response to the explosive growth of the Latino community in South Carolina and across the Southeastern United States, Indie Grits 2017 will turn its focus to Latino film, culture, and arts through the theme Visiones.
