Irmo Middle School awarded 2017 Litter Trashes Everyone Education Grant

Irmo Middle School International Academic Magnet has been awarded a 2017 Litter Trashes Everyone Education Grant presented by Palmetto Pride in the amount of $5,000. “Team Migration Nation at Irmo Middle School was elated to learn that we had been awarded a $5,000 grant from Palmetto Pride,” said Irmo Middle School seventh grade science teacher William Green. “This grant will be used to purchase composite material lumber to create seating around our milkweed garden.”

Green says some of the funds will also go towards a metal Monarch butterfly display to adorn the garden. This is another piece in the IMS expedition about the plight of Monarch butterflies. This expedition allows students to learn about this issue in all core classes and then take action to be a part of the solution and to educate the community. Team Migration Nation has partnered with the Town of Irmo, South Carolina Wildlife Federation and Dutch Fork Elementary School for their Monarchs and Milkweed project.

The Litter Trashes Everyone Grant is designed to get students involved in activities that will educate them and their communities about the importance of keeping their state clean and attractive, while promoting in the next generation a sense of pride in the community.

“We are certainly very excited to receive this grant to deepen the learning experiences of our students,” Irmo Middle School principal Robert Jackson said. “The added resources will enable us to make the standards come alive for students so we can create experiences that offer in-depth studies and offer real world connections that inspire students towards high levels of academic achievement. We are so grateful for the hard work and dedication of our teachers and the continuous support of Palmetto Pride to advance educational outcomes to meet the needs of all learners in South Carolina.”
