James B Edwards is creating global leaders, locally

December 9, 2015

James B Edwards is a partial magnet school nestled between the old and new East Cooper Hospitals.  With a student body population over 650 students, JBE continues to reach each child by creating engaging educational opportunities for their students.

JBE implements the “Seven Habits” as outlined by Stephen Covey in The Leader in Me.   Additionally, the school has an added component, Global Learning.  Throughout the school year teachers expose their students to a wide variety of global activates that enable students to be exposed to the amazing world we live in and truly begin to understand that the world is so much bigger than Mount Pleasant, SC.

This week the Wona Womalan African Dance and Drum Group performed for the entire school.  Some of the highlights of the show were students participating in learning some of the dances and drum beats.  The principal, Jake Rambo, even danced on the stage!  The dances were from the West African country, Guinea.  The teachers furthered this instruction in the classroom by providing information, websites, videos and activities for students to further learn about Africa and the upcoming holiday Kawanzaa.

Also, this week all students in kindergarten through 5th grade participated in the Hour of Code.  This program is sponsored by Code.org.  For one week out of the year over 15 million students all over the world in more than 180 countries unite to learn computer programming skills, coding.  Students at JBE learned how to code games on a variety of websites.  Coding involves problem solving skills and encourages students to try and retry a problem until they succeed.  Participating in this global movement shows our JBE global leaders that technology is a universal, global language!
