Law change makes donating to Habitat for Humanity easier

South Carolina residents now can donate to the South Carolina Association for Habitat for Humanity Affiliates from their South Carolina income tax returns.
This change will be in place for taxpayer’s 2017 returns, and allows people getting an income tax return from the state to designate to the South Carolina Association for Habitat for Humanity Affiliates to receive a donation, said Greg Thomas, the association’s director.
The collected money will be used by the South Carolina Association for Habitat for Humanity Affiliates to help provide training, staff development, offer grants and other resources to help the 36 Habitat chapters in South Carolina, he said. The association said they expect it will bring in $25,000 the first year, but it may be more.
The bill, H4765, was introduced in the House in January, sent to the Senate in April and signed into law by Gov. Nikki Haley in June. State Rep. Garry Smith, R-Simpsonville, was the main author of the legislation.
“We believe this will grow the strength of the Habitat affiliates across the state, which in turn allows us to help more families and grow stronger communities,” Thomas said.
