Leadership Greenville selects zoo project

October 16, 2013

GREENVILLE, SC – October 16, 2013 –  Leadership Greenville has chosen to work on a new South American aviary for the next 10 months after an application from the  Friends of the Greenville Zoo was selected.

Leadership Greenville, which is a LEAD program of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, picks two to four projects annually in an effort to better the local community. More than 50 non-profits groups and other agencies applied for Leadership Greenville support in 2013.

The Friends of the Greenville Zoo requested redevelopment of the aviary for the zoo located in Cleveland Park.

The current South American aviary was formed by connecting several smaller exhibits and currently holds a pair of sun conures, a curassow, and a plush crested jay.  This space, while suitable for a small number of birds, needs to be enlarged to prevent and reduce aggression between species and to allow an opportunity to add new species of birds.

The Greenville Zoo and the Leadership Greenville team plan to eliminate the existing enclosure and re-construct a larger bird aviary on the same site.  This enlarged and improved exhibit will provide a much greater viewing area, as well as support the health and wellbeing of the current inhabitants.

Leadership Greenville has an amazing legacy in our community and we honored to have been selected by them, said Elizabeth Geer, Friends of the Greenville Zoo chairwoman.
