Legacy Charter School Begins New Year With New Principals

August 9, 2011

GREENVILLE, SC – August 9, 2011 – Legacy Charter School kicks off its 2011-12 school year with three new principals. Ginny Burrows is the elementary school principal for Legacy Charter School’s newly renovated campus at the site of the former Greenville County Fine Arts Center. Frank Powell and Kuterah Peake are co-principals of the middle/high schools at Legacy Charter School’s Parker Campus.

Burrows (pictured, right) has served as an educator for more than two decades. She most recently served as a curriculum and instructional facilitator at the district level in Gaffney. A former teacher of the year in Cherokee County as well as in New Jersey, Burrows holds master’s degrees from Converse College and the University of South Carolina.

Frank Powell has held responsibilities with public schools in Greenville County that range from buses to baseball. A veteran teacher, coach and administrator, he has served as assistant principal at both Tanglewood and Greer middle schools. Powell holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Clemson University.

Kuterah Peake is the former assistant principal at Carolina High School and, like Powell, previously served at Tanglewood Middle. A former Spanish teacher, Peake has studied abroad in Spain. She has a master’s degree from Converse College and is working toward a doctorate in educational leadership from Capella University.

“We are very pleased to welcome these new leaders into our Legacy Charter School family,” said William Brown, the school’s board chairman. “We know they will be valuable in fulfilling our promise that every student at Legacy Charter School graduates college and has the opportunity to create a healthy and better life for themselves, their families and their community.”

Legacy Charter School is a free, public charter school open to all students in Greenville County. It includes approximately 900 students in grades K5-10 across two campuses on Greenville’s Westside. Parker Campus serves students in grades 5-10, while a newly renovated campus at the site of the former Greenville County Fine Arts Center serves students in K5-4.

There are several aspects which make Legacy Charter School special. The school day is extended to 5 p.m. to allow for extra instruction. Legacy Charter School offers a rigorous curriculum that gives students the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school. It is also the only school in South Carolina that offers physical education courses to every student, every day. The focus on fitness carries over to the school cafeteria, with its emphasis on proper nutrition and healthy snacks.
