May 6, 2016

On the 22nd of March, the Lexington County Council, by resolution, proclaimed April as “Green is Clean Month” and encouraged Lexington County citizens to participate in the several events to raise environmental awareness in our community.

E-waste_3On April 9th, at the Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, Over 930 residents delivered a total of 25,558 pounds (12.78) tons of household hazardous waste; 50,100 pounds (25.05 tons) of electronic waste – including television sets, computers, printers and other electronic items; 2,182 pounds of pesticides/insecticides; 15,960 pounds (7.98 tons) of paper documents for shredding and 321 used shoes were donated to the underprivileged.

The event was hosted by the Department of Solid Waste Management in partnership with the Lexington Public Works Department, the Stormwater Consortium and Keep the Midlands Beautiful.

The Backyard Garden Day Event was held on Saturday, April 23rd at the Red Bank Crossing parking lot. During the event, 75 residents purchased 56 compost bins (provided through a State Grant) and 20 tons of compost produced from the County Compost facility.

Residents purchasing the compost bins were given two free bags of compost produced with our new compost bagging machine and many lucky participants received compost bin giveaways including a kitchen collection container and compost turner.

Many thanks to the event volunteers and Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church for use of their facilities!

We look forward to seeing you next April!
