The South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children presented the organization’s 2015-2016 Para-Educator of the Year Award to Lexington High Instructional Assistant Carla Roland.

The state Council for Exceptional Children presented the award to Roland in recognition of her strong collaboration with supervising teachers and other instructional team members. Roland received the award during the organization’s annual conference, which was held February 4, through February 6, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

“Carla has a phenomenal ability to both care deeply for her students and give them the support they need while still holding them accountable and maintaining high expectations for them,” a Lexington High English teacher wrote in a letter nominating Roland for the award. “She has an uncanny knack of knowing exactly what a student needs to hear in any given situation to get them motivated and keep them on track, and she never hesitates to jump right into whatever activity is going on in the classroom at any given time.”

The state Council for Exceptional Children also recognized Roland for her efforts to implement curricular modifications and other accommodations that result in a positive learning environment for students with special needs.

“Carla thinks about students’ needs constantly and usually meets them before I even know there is a need,” a Lexington High math teacher wrote in a letter nominating Roland for the award. “Her never-ending patience and positive attitude make her one of a kind. There is no way our class could survive without Ms. Roland.”
