Lourie Center Receives National Honor for Innovative Program

Award Highlights Outstanding Program for Columbia Seniors
Columbia, SC – The Isadore E. Lourie Senior Center (Lourie Center) in Columbia, SC was recently recognized by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), receiving an Honorable Mention for its highly successful Technology Boot Camp program. The award was presented as part of NCOA’s National Institute of Senior Centers 2014 Programs of Excellence.
The Lourie Center and the Women’s Intel Network (WIN), a volunteer program for Intel employees, partnered together on Friday July 25, 2014 to offer the event. Ten Intel employees volunteered their technological expertise for two hours of consulting at the Lourie Center, meeting with seniors in small group workshops to discuss internet, email, laptop computers and cell phones. Sessions were basic and informal, allowing those with specific questions to get immediate answers.
“The Lourie Center programs are all designed to enhance and continue senior independence, and technology education is an important part of that formula,” states Mary Kessler, Executive Director at the Lourie Center. “The seniors who attended our Technology Boot Camp received valuable, practical information and the ability to better communicate using modern technology. It was also a great opportunity to partner with Intel Corporation. We are thrilled to be recognized nationally by the NCOA for this addition to our programming and hope to be able to offer it again in 2015 “
