LS3P wins three AIA South Carolina Design Awards

December 10, 2020

LS3P earned three awards at the AIA South Carolina 2020 Design Awards, held virtually on December 3.

Trident Technical College South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center received an Honor Award for New Construction. This 164,000 SF facility provides highly specialized training for the future aeronautics workforce, including floors zoned for hands-on avionics training, specialty labs, and academic spaces. The overall design of the building carries a sleek, contemporary, and streamlined aesthetic, highlighted by custom graphics, colorful accents, and a materials palette that pay homage to the cutting-edge aeronautics industry.

The Wando Mount Pleasant Library was recognized with a Merit Award for New Construction. Design considerations for this 40,000 SF facility connect the space to its surrounding Lowcountry environment: The exterior materials include indigenous brick of Savannah moss color, low-maintenance wood-like elements for warmth and texture, and expansive glazing to maximize transparency, while interior details mimic the textures of tree bark and grass alongside the turquoise hues of nearby waterways.

Hoffler Place, an upscale student living development by Armada Hoffler and Spandrel Development Partners, received a Merit Award for Interior Architecture. This seven-story structure features an interior materials palette that pays tribute to Charleston’s historic architectural detailing. The amenity corridor recreates the experience of meandering alleyways; porcelain tile slabs lining the corridor resemble the color of wrought iron and the texture of plaster; and handmade wall tile installations create a sense of movement and mimic the growth of a native creeping fig.
