Marvin Stevenson Becomes Chairman of SCDOT Commission; Daniel H. Isaac Jr. of Myrtle Beach Elected Vice Chairman

COLUMBIA, SC – March 16, 2010 – Marvin Stevenson of Marion County became Chairman of the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Commission on Monday, March 15, succeeding Henry H. Taylor of Lexington who resigned as Chairman.

Taylor, who had been Chairman since December, remains a member of the Commission until a successor is named from the 2nd Congressional District.

Because Stevenson had been serving as Vice Chairman, he automatically became Chairman when Taylor stepped down. As SCDOT Commission Chairman, Stevenson becomes a member of the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank Board.

The Commission unanimously elected 1st Congressional District Commissioner Daniel H. Isaac Jr. of Myrtle Beach as Vice Chairman of the Commission.

Isaac has been a member of the SCDOT Commission representing the 1st Congressional District since March 2008.

Taylor has represented the 2nd Congressional District on the SCDOT Commission since March of 2007. He holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina, and he is a cum laude graduate of the University of South Carolina’s School of Law. 

Stevenson, a former Chairman of the Marion County Council, is the fourth child of Benjamin Stevenson and Ella Livingston Stevenson, and was born on December 11, 1940, in Marion. 

He was educated in the public schools of Marion County and graduated from Terrell’s Bay High School in 1957.  He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies from Allen University in 1961.  He pursued graduate work at South Carolina State College, (South Carolina State University), in Orangeburg.

Stevenson served as a Social Studies teacher at his high school Alma Mater for 24 years (1961-1985) and became the Attendance Supervisor of Marion County Schools in 1985.

In 1968, Stevenson was appointed by the Marion County Delegation to the Marion County Board of Commission and served until September 1976.  In 1976, he was elected as a member of the Marion County Council.  He served as Chairman of the Marion County Council 1982-1987 and from 1994 until August 29, 2003.

Stevenson has served his community in various capacities including as a member of St. James A.M.E. Church, Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Steward Board, elected as a Delegate to the General Conference of the A.M.E. Church from 1972-2004.  His Fraternal organizations are: Masonic Lodge #344, McDonald Consistory #226 and Bejilah Temple #163.

Stevenson has been honored with citations for distinguished service by several organizations including: the 1976 Citizen of the Year Award by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; 1990 Outstanding service Award by the Community Action Agency; 1987 Appreciation Award for Outstanding Service to the Clemson Extension Service; 1999 Community Service Award for Outstanding Community service by the Community Awareness Association; and in 1980-1974 listed in the book of Outstanding Personalities

of the South.  Stevenson has received citations for Outstanding Community Services from the Marion County Council, City of Marion, City of Mullins, and the Marion County Board of Education.

Stevenson devotes his time and energy to serving in the community and helping the less fortunate throughout Marion County and the State of South Carolina.

He is married to the formed Doris J. Legette of Rains, S.C.  They have one daughter, Marvaretta.

A 1974 graduate of The Citadel, Isaac is the President of A&I Corporation and its North Carolina sister company, Alisco, Inc. Isaac serves on the Board of Directors of Crescent Bank, the Board of Directors of Electric Services of South Carolina, and is the treasurer of Benchmark Management. He holds a South Carolina residential builders license and a general contractor’s license in both North and South Carolina.

He also is involved in the Construction Management Technology program at Horry-Georgetown Technical College.  Isaac is active in the Restoration Industry Association, the professional trade organization related to his profession.

He is married to Sally M. Isaac and has two children.
