Mayor Benjamin releases statement following President Obama’s visit to Columbia

March 7, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin released the following statement today following President Barack Obama’s visit to Columbia and town hall event at Benedict College:

“Hosting President Obama today, along with Attorney General Eric Holder, White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett and Cabinet Secretary Broderick D. Johnson, was not only a great honor for all of Columbia but a once in a lifetime opportunity for members of our community to interact with and engage our nation’s leaders in a very personal way. The impact that kind of opportunity has on all of us cannot be overstated.

“Today was about giving everyday Americans the chance to speak directly to their President. It was about celebrating all we have accomplished together and re-committing ourselves to finishing the work we’ve started especially when it comes to ensuring that all of our young people have the tools and support they need to live up to their God-given potential regardless of what obstacles may stand before them.

“That’s what My Brother’s Keeper is all about and as we continue to see more and more groups and individuals from the public and private sectors alike join this cause, we move that much closer to making this great vision a reality.

“Like President Obama, Columbia is wildly optimistic about the future and today we had plenty of reasons to celebrate.”
