Mayor Proclaims June 7 Brett and Jacob Rhoad Day in Chapin

June 3, 2014

CHAPIN, SC – Mayor Skip Wilson has proclaimed Saturday, June 7, 2014, as Brett and Jacob Rhoad Day in Chapin in honor of the two young men’s efforts to increase awareness and support in the fight against muscular dystrophy.  Saturday marks the fifth annual Rhoad Cup Festival, a family-friendly day filled with a four-on-four soccer tournament, inflatables, games, silent auction, food and fun at Crooked Creek Park.

According to event organizer Sydney Rhame, the festival begins at 8 am and lasts until 3 pm, with both breakfast and lunch provided. The soccer tournament is open to individuals age 6 to adult and registration is $20 per person. Teams will be put together based on age and experience, and walk-up registrants are accepted, too. If you aren’t a soccer player, you can enjoy a variety of other activities available at the park.

Brett and Jacob Rhoad are rising sophomores at Spring Hill High School. They were diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at the age of four. Duchenne is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 live births. Duchenne results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for dystrophin. It can affect anyone, and approximately 35% of cases occur because of random spontaneous mutation.

The Rhoad twins have been tireless advocates to create awareness for Duchenne and great role models for their friends, family and fellow students. Proceeds from the Rhoad Festival Cup will help support the Rhoad family with their sons’ medical expenses.  For sponsorship information, donations or to volunteer please contact Rhame at [email protected].
