Midlands Technical College begins work on Veteran Center

August 10, 2016

Midlands Technical College (MTC) has begun work to create an area exclusively for veterans on its Beltline Campus near Fort Jackson.  The college was awarded $8,570 as part of a Vet Center Initiative grant from Student Veterans of America and The Home Depot Foundation to fund the project.

“Veteran centers on college campuses make a positive impact on student veteran success,” said Midlands Technical College President Dr. Ronald L. Rhames. “Since many veterans commute to school, have jobs, or juggle other responsibilities, having a place on campus to connect with other veterans and resources can be invaluable.”

As one of the largest providers of veterans’ educational benefits to service members and their families in the

Palmetto State, Midlands Technical College enrolls more than 1,000 veterans each fall. This grant is an additional way the college is continuing its focus on making student veteran success a priority.

“Walking onto a college campus after leaving the military can be a disorienting experience for student veterans. With some elbow grease and the grant, MTC will be able to purchase furniture, paint, and décor to ultimately create a home away from home for veterans on the Beltline campus,” said Rhames.

Student Veterans of America and The Home Depot Foundation first teamed up in 2014 to launch the Vet Center Initiative. Midlands Technical College is one of only 50 college communities awarded grants for 2016. The college hopes to begin work on the student veteran area late this summer.
