Museum & Gallery at Bob Jones University hosts children’s events in the Upstate

June 6, 2016

Children throughout the Upstate are having their artistic horizons expanded this summer through the Museum & Gallery’s summer educational programs.

For three Fridays in July, from 2-3:30 p.m., kids are invited to come to M&G at Bob Jones University for Adventures in Art. Children will find their learning experience enhanced as they explore flowers, birds and mythical creatures in M&G’s impressive European Old Master collection. They will then create a memorable project reflecting that day’s adventure theme as well as enjoy a small snack.

“The ‘Adventures in Art’ series serves as a great way for kids to learn about and enjoy art and history in a laid-back, summer setting,” says Jessica Hargett, M&G’s SC-certified secondary education coordinator.

For the past two weeks, M&G has also hosted its annual Kids Create! art day camp. This dynamic program, which runs the entire month of June, provides an extensive outreach to hundreds of children every summer!  It wards off summer boredom and summer learning loss.

Kindergarteners are introduced to the basic elements of art, covering the foundational principles of shape, line, texture and color while the elementary school students explore the medieval times, learning about the different aspects of daily life and culture of people living during the middle ages.

Since the program takes place at M&G’s main museum, students receive an inside look at art from the time period, viewing paintings and objects dating back to the Middle Ages—as early as the 1100s.

“Students not only have the opportunity to learn about the history of medieval art,” Amy Basinger, M&G’s events and marketing coordinator shares, “they also have the opportunity to see first-hand prime examples of the era in M&G’s own collection.”

On the Saturday of each Kids Create! week, children and their families are invited to Family Day. This special event gives each family the chance to enjoy the collection, shop deals in the gift shop, and see their child’s art on exhibit in the museum.

Middle school students will learn the techniques of watercolor painting at a full-day camp in Kids Create! 2016 Watercolor Studio from June 13-17.  On the afternoon of June 18, these young artists will open a special exhibition of their works at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Greenville before being moved to the Starbucks adjoining the Hyatt from June 19-July 5 for public display.

Adventures in Art and Kids Create! are vital to M&G’s educational mission of broadening the world for young people by exposing them at a young age to creativity and cultures in the past to foster an appreciation for beauty and people’s differing talents,” says Erin Jones, M&G director.

Space is available in the Adventures in Art program and middle school watercolor classes. To register, visit M&G’s Upcoming Events tab at www.bjumg.org or call 864-770-1331.
