NAI Avant Represents Seller of Goodwill Plantation, Facilitates Completion of Haile Gold Mine Mitigation Plan

July 22, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – NAI Avant senior brokers, Tom Milliken and Tombo Milliken, represented the seller of a large portion of Goodwill Plantation in the third and final phase of the Haile Gold Mine mitigation plan to the state of South Carolina. The portion of the Goodwill Plantation property was purchased for $20 million. Goodwill Plantation, which consists of approximately 2,545 acres of previously privately-owned, undeveloped land, was the largest inland working rice plantation on the east coast. It was the third and final property to be acquired by Haile Gold Mine, in addition to Rainbow Ranch and Cook’s Mountain, to complete the mitigation plan created to offset the future environmental impact of the gold mine.

“Now that the mitigation plan has been finalized and all the properties have now been donated to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, we are able to announce our involvement in assisting the completion of this significant deal,” commented NAI Avant senior broker Tom Milliken.  NAI Avant worked closely with Bob Perry of DNR and Haile Gold Mine officials to facilitate the sale of both Cook’s Mountain and Goodwill Plantation. Tom and Tombo Milliken led over 400 people from South Carolina agencies, federal agencies, and environmentalists on more than 40 tours of the properties in the past three years to see its historic sites, remarkable views, and opportunities for wetland and stream restoration and preservation.

Goodwill Plantation and Cook’s Mountain, which together will now be referred to as the new Wateree River Heritage Preserve, will soon be open to the public. In total, the Haile Gold Mine mitigation plan has added an additional ±4,375 acres to the already ±90,000 acres protected by the Heritage Trust Program. These properties will be available as part of DNR’s managed land programs to offer the public the opportunity to experience rich natural and cultural lands for hunting, fishing, hiking, bird watching, biking as well as educational and research purposes.
