New Law Enforcement Academy at Cane Bay High

September 6, 2016

Cane Bay High School has partnered with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office in order to create the newest academy in the Academies of Berkeley County, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Academy. The partnership agreement will be signed on Friday, September 9, 2016, at 11:15 a.m. at Cane Bay High School.

Principal of Cane Bay High School, Dr. Lee Westberry, said, “The Law Enforcement Academy has approximately 100 students enrolled in it. The enrollment for the course will continue to rise, as this is just the first year of the pathway! We are extremely excited about this new opportunity for our students.”

Students participating in the new Law Enforcement Academy at Cane Bay High School expressed interest in pursuing careers in law enforcement. Students will follow the South Carolina Department of Education Law Enforcement Curriculum and will benefit from many hands-on experiences and training. Tim Wright, a 10-year veteran police officer, is the teacher for the course.

“I am very excited to partner with Cane Bay High School to allow students throughout our community the opportunity to learn about law enforcement careers. Not only will the students learn about the jobs associated with the law enforcement field, but also they will gain knowledge and insight as to the responsibilities of officers. This partnership will undoubtedly improve community relations because we will learn from the students, and they will learn from us. Additionally, this new academy will address the workforce development issues in our area. We look forward to this partnership and to helping educate students and perhaps even prepare them for a career serving their community,” said Berkeley County Sheriff, Duane Lewis.
