No evidence of contamination found at West Ashley dog park

February 13, 2017

A thorough evaluation of the Bees Landing dog park by HAZMAT crews using standard hazardous materials protocols has revealed no evidence of chemical contamination.

Earlier, the city of Charleston temporarily closed the Bees Landing dog park, in response to a citizen report that her dog, Dixie, died shortly after walking through the dog park, and that Dixie’s veterinarian had suggested the possibility of strychnine poisoning.

Charleston Fire Department Chief Karen Brack said, “We do not take reports of this nature lightly. As soon as it was brought to our attention, we sent our HAZMAT crews out to the park to inspect for any signs of toxic materials that would be unsafe for people or their pets. Our highly-trained HAZMAT team assessed the park and did not find any indicators of harmful chemicals at the time of their investigation.”

As a result of the negative tests, the park is expected to reopen tomorrow.

Bees Landing dog park, located on Ashley Gardens Boulevard, is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to dusk.
